Gum disease
is the most common dental health complaint witnessed by dentists. It affects
around 70 percent of adults and is the leading reason for tooth loss among
American adults. Fortunately, this condition can be totally reversed or cured
if you catch it early enough. In the early stages, there are simple things that
you can do to restore your gum health. However, if you allow gum disease to
settle in and become advanced, then you may have to suffer long-term effects on
your dental health.
Identifying
The Early Symptoms
The first
step to treating gum disease early on and being able to
successfully reverse it is to know what the early warning signs are and be on
the lookout for them. Some of these symptoms are:
· Bleeding
gums
· Dark
colored gums
· Pain
· Swelling
· Receding
gums
· Pockets
of gum tissue around the tooth
· Loose
teeth
· Bad
breath
· Bad
taste in the mouth
If you
notice these signs, then you should visit your dentist for professional advice
about how to best overcome the condition. In addition, you are likely to have
to take the following steps in your daily life in order to restore yourgum health:
Good
Oral Hygiene
Good oral
hygiene is essential if you are going to reverse the condition. You need to
brush your teeth regularly, at least twice a day, but ideally after each
meal. Using an electric toothbrush with a moving head has also been
shown to be more effective at removing the bacteria and plaque that cause gum
disease.
In addition
to brushing your teeth routinely, you should also be flossing. This step is
important because it removes food particles and bacteria that get stuck between
the teeth and can cause infection. Using a mouthwash is also important as this
step in your oral health routine flushes away any leftover bacteria and leaves
your mouth feeling fresh and clean. Try to avoid mouthwash products that
contain alcohol as it can damage gum tissue health.
Important
Lifestyle Changes
There are
certain lifestyle changes that may be necessary in order to enjoy a good level
of oral health. One of the key lifestyle changes to make is to take a look at
your diet and cut out as much sugar and processed food as you can. Instead fill
your daily diet with fresh fruits and vegetables. Make sure that you drink
plenty of water to keep bacteria flushed away and if you are a smoker, then it
is most certainly time to quit.

ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this information on gum disease. I'm nervous that I may have it from my smoking days, but I'm not sure. Do you know where I can find more information about his disease? I probably should visit a dentist soon. Do I need to go to a specialized dentist or would my East Harlem dentists be okay to go to? Thank you for your great post!

ReplyDeleteThis is a really interesting post on gum disease. I am terrified of getting gum disease but I will admit that I don't take all the preventative measures I could. Preventing gum disease would probably be a better than curing it later.

I like how you mentioned ways to prevent gum disease. With most things pertaining to the mouth I think its better to prevent rather than try to fix later. Think about cavities or getting crowns etc. Gum disease best solution is try to prevent it. But who doesn't want good oral hygiene anyway? I think its good motivation for individuals to keep their mouth clean.
